Supporting sustainability projects in the African cotton and textile sector
With our own funds and on behalf of different funding entities, we support the implementation of sustainability projects in the African cotton sector. Our engagement ranges from technical short-term assignments, to project management support, to training and coaching, and field trials.
In 2017, we conducted short term assignments and provided management support to the implementation of two projects by the Aid by Trade Foundation.
With substantial financial support coming from the German Ministry for the period 2017-2020, we will increase our project portfolio substantially in the coming months.
Check our project descriptions below for an overview of our activities in the field.
Projects of the Cotton Expert House Africa
From our own funds, we implement technical assignments and studies to provide targeted support to cotton companies and to broaden the information base for the wider sector audience. The factsheet Supporting Sustainable African Cotton Production summarizes our objectives, projects and initiatives.
Moreover, a project example is given here.
Co-financing sustainability projects with BMZ
In 2018, we started co-financing sustainability projects for the African cotton sector with the support of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. By co-financing agricultural trainings, the Cotton Expert House Africa supports the cotton companies’ cascading extension system to deliver improved and sustainable cotton production techniques. For more information on our projects and partners, please read our factsheet Using Picture Blocks for Training on Key Sustainability Topics.
In another project, we focus on the use of bio-pesticides given that cotton pest infestation is a real threat to cotton yields in Africa.
For more information, we prepared the factsheet Promoting Bio-Pesticides for Better Cotton Yields.
Projects on behalf of the Aid by Trade Foundation
In 2017, we supported the Aid by Trade Foundation with the implementation of a bio pesticide project Eastern and Southern Africa and a training project in Northern Ethiopia. Find out about project examples here.
